Datuk Shahrin Zahrin is pushing for UMNO delegates to adopt several resolutions at the forthcoming UMNO general assembly to appoint former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad as party advisor and Tun Daim Zainuddin as special economic advisor to the Government.
There have been wide spread on and off talks of the formation of a council of elders within the party, but todate nothing concrete have come out from the rumours, while bringing back Daim is seen as a move to tap into the brains of the man who was minister of finanace some three decades ago.
Daim had twice helped stir the country from economic gloom. His first stint as minister of finanace was in 1984, a year before the country would face the wrath of a global recession .
Daim help stop the practice of borrowing to beef up funds for spending, while cutting expenditure to suit income by slashing allocation for the public sector.
As a result between 1987 and 1989, Malaysia paid off about RM6.8 billion of her foreign debts which was earlier than scheduled, a record repayment for developing nations .
The tycoon who was "recalled" during the 1997 finanacial crisis, has in recent weeks broken his silence, pushing for "more to be done" to manage the ailing economy.
Malaysia's exports in January, valued at RM38.3 billion, had fallen 27.8 per cent from January 2008 , as analysts raise their bets that the country would succumb to recession before the year is over.
In an interview with the NST, Shahrin said that the duo should be recalled due to the challenges facing the party, and due to the massisve challenges facing the nation's economy.
He said that he has spoken to several UMNO youth heads, who either hold divisional head or vice division head positions on the matter, and they are in agreement that the duo should be brought in some form of advisory position.
"The consensus are internal party bickering should halt. Its time for us to put our house in order to face the challenges ahead," said Shahrin.
"Dr M, if you read his blog seems to have his ears on the pulse of the nation...on whats ailling the party. At this point we require leaders who command the respect of the ground, to guide, cajole or even scold the party to stir it in the right direction," said Shahrin.
He noted that more than a year ago, Tun Daim had predicted that as many as five states would fall to the opposition during the general election, yet his views were not tapped by the party strategist.
"Even as recent as this year, Dr M have suggested that the rulling coalition might lose its mandate in the next general election. We need the best brains to help get us out of the bank," said Shahrin.
[If you don't remember reading it in the paper, please don't panic. Because the editors decided NOT to publish it! I was told it didn't even reach the desk of the Group Editor...]
There's also talk raging in blogosphere that Tan Sri Sanusi Junid may be back as National Security Adviser after the assembly! But then there have been a lot of commenters saying that this blogger will definitely be made editorial supremo at the NSTP! How sweet...
